Mental Wellness: Raising Awareness

Mental Wellness: Raising Awareness

September 25, 2023

Mental health is a fundamental aspect of our overall wellbeing, and it's important to recognize that mental illnesses are both common and treatable. September is Suicide Prevention Month—a time to reflect on our own mental health and raise awareness around this topic. Statistics show that 1 in 5 individuals will encounter a mental illness during their lifetime, but even those who do not face such conditions may still encounter life challenges that affect their mental health. A 2019 CDC study that examined mortality rates among veterinarians found that 1 in 6 veterinarians have considered suicide. The COVID-19 pandemic underscored the importance of mental health, affecting people of all ages. Now, more than ever, we must combat the stigma surrounding mental health struggles, which often hinder individuals from seeking help.

To maintain good mental health, it's crucial to acknowledge that there are aspects of life beyond our control. It's essential to actively process the mental hurdles associated with significant changes, manage anger and frustration constructively, identify when trauma might be impacting your mental well-being, challenge negative thought patterns, and allocate time for self-care.

A valuable tool to gauge your mental health is by taking a mental health screening available at Mental Health America. This resource offers a quick, free, and private way to assess your mental health and identify potential signs of mental health issues.

Another trusted resource is Not One More Vet, created by Dr. Nicole McArthur. Their mission is to provide support to veterinary professionals through peer support and education.

Remember, seeking professional help when self-help strategies prove ineffective is a sign of strength, not weakness.
