This Mental Health Awareness Month, we are being encouraged to go beyond understanding mental health and start doing something about it. The theme this year is "Turn Awareness into Action." Here are some ideas, inspired by Mental Health America, that you can try at your veterinary hospital:
Organize mental health walks - Plan regular walks with your team to promote physical activity, reduce stress, and encourage open conversations about mental health. Invite your clients to join to foster community and normalize mental health discussions.
Partner with local businesses for wellness events - Collaborate with local businesses to promote, or help organize, wellness events focused on mental health. These events can include activities such as yoga sessions, meditation workshops, and stress management seminars.
Create a book club dedicated to exploring mental health topics - Choose books that cover various aspects of mental health, such as self-care, resilience, and mindfulness. book club can be a valuable resource for learning and connecting with others who share an interest in mental health.
Promote access to professional help - Make sure your team knows they have access to high quality mental health professionals. Vetcor team members, talk to your hospital manager about Lyra Health, our new, free mental health benefit offering confidential support services, including access to mental health counselors and therapists in the US. Our Canadian team members also have access to confidential mental health support through Manulife.
Just knowing about mental health isn't enough. Together we can create a supportive and proactive environment at our veterinary hospitals and our communities by putting our awareness to work.
