Vetcor externships provide an excellent foundation for aspiring veterinary professionals to advance their careers. Texas A&M University veterinary student, Caroline Knight, successfully completed her first Vetcor externship in July at Josey Ranch Pet Hospital in Carrollton, Texas. This hands-on opportunity allowed her to gain invaluable experience and practical skills in a professional clinical environment.

We recently connected with Caroline to gather her unique perspective on Vetcor’s externship program.

What made you interested in a Vetcor externship?

I first learned about Vetcor when I met some representatives at the Texas A&M Job and Externship Fair in the fall. When I found out that Josey Ranch was part of the Vetcor family, I knew I had to visit—it sounded like the perfect place to grow my skills and gain hands-on experience.

What was the most valuable piece of advice you received from the Josey Ranch team?

I truly valued the opportunity to talk with the veterinarians about their career paths and hear their advice for a new graduate veterinarian. Discussing cases with them, both the ones we saw together and hypothetical scenarios, gave me insight into different approaches and decision-making styles that will serve me well in my own career.

How did the staff and doctors support your learning and make you feel like part of the team?

Everyone was so welcoming! Even something as small as greeting me with a cheerful “good morning” made a big difference in how comfortable I felt. The doctors and technicians went out of their way to involve me in interesting cases and unique learning opportunities. They even included me in their lunch-and-learn and their National Hot Dog Day celebration, which made me feel like a true member of the team. The staff were always willing to help when I felt unsure and took the time to guide me through developing many technical skills. Their support made a huge difference in my experience.

What was your experience working with the Josey Ranch veterinarian team?

All of the veterinarians I worked with were truly fantastic! I had the privilege of spending most of my time with Dr. Esmond, Dr. Cortiaus, and Dr. Barnett, and I’m so grateful for their guidance. They were patient, encouraging, and eager to teach, allowing me to be hands-on with cases, assist in surgery, and take part in client communication. Their mentorship made my time here an incredibly rewarding and memorable learning experience.

What's one new skill or procedure you feel more confident in now that you've completed this experience?

One of my main goals for this externship was to become more confident in canine reproduction. I now feel much more comfortable performing TCIs (transcervical insemination), conducting semen analysis, and performing pregnancy ultrasounds.

What was your favorite part of the entire experience?

Without a doubt, the people. The doctors, technicians, and staff were not only supportive but encouraged me to be hands-on in cases. Their enthusiasm and willingness to teach made each day exciting and gave me valuable real-world experience.

How did this experience prepare you for your future career in vet med?

This externship made me feel like a real doctor. In school, we spend years learning the science and medicine, but there’s something uniquely valuable about working in a fast-paced clinic, seeing real patients, and interacting with their families. Over the two weeks, I gained confidence in creating my own diagnostic and treatment plans and effectively communicating those plans to clients.

What advice would you give to a veterinary student considering an externship with Vetcor?

Absolutely go for it! Externships are one of the best ways to gain hands-on experience while in school, especially in a clinic that challenges you to try new things and supports you along the way.

Would you change anything about your learning experience?

I only wish my time here had been longer! I was fortunate to spend two weeks with the incredible team at Josey Ranch, and I wasn’t ready to leave when my rotation came to an end.

Is there anything else you’d like to add?

This was truly one of the most welcoming and enriching externships I’ve experienced in vet school. I left not only with improved skills and confidence, but with wonderful memories and meaningful connections. I’m so thankful for the time I had with the Josey Ranch team and hope to work with them again in the future.
