Caring for the Uncommon

Caring for the Uncommon
Rare Companions, Real Love!

July 15, 2025

Across the country our veterinary teams open their doors and hearts to animals that fall outside the traditional definition of “pet.” From baby kangaroos to raccoons and tiny fluffballs with big personalities, these uncommon companions receive the same expert care and compassion as their more familiar counterparts.

Mt. Spokane Veterinary HospitalMt. Spokane Veterinary Hospital - Mead, Washington
It was impossible not to smile watching Hammy, the tiniest ball of fluff, charm everyone during his visit with Dr. Ahrendt recently. The whole team lit up the moment he arrived, treating him with the same care and enthusiasm they show to every creature that walks, hops, or slithers through their doors. Their passion for pocket pets is unmistakable, from gentle hands to warm smiles, Mt. Spokane Veterinary Hospital embraces the small wonders of the animal world.

Verandah Pet HospitalVerandah Pet Hospital - Ft. Myers, Florida
Verandah Pet Hospital had quite a unique patient recently, a baby raccoon, full of charisma and curiosity. What a pleasure it was to treat this sweet little one. While raccoons aren’t your typical household pet, in Florida, it is legal to own one if you obtain the proper license. The special license ensures that owners meet strict requirements for housing, enrichment, and safety. Caring for uncommon pets like raccoons requires dedication, proper facilities, and a deep understanding of their needs, but the reward is an unforgettable bond with a truly extraordinary companion.

Ponemah Veterinary HospitalPonemah Veterinary Hospital - Amherst, New Hampshire
Ponemah Veterinary Hospital is passionate about inspiring the next generation. Dr. Provencher, along with team members Abbi, McAffery, and Jenn, brought their enthusiasm and expertise to a local school career day, engaging with curious 3rd and 4th graders and giving them a glimpse into the world of veterinary medicine. The day was made even more special with a visit to Dr. Provencher’s nieces’ classroom, where the team got to meet a brood of baby chicks before they head off to their forever homes. The hospital has deep roots in the community and their commitment to education, compassion, and connection both in and out of the clinic.

Branchville Animal HospitalBranchville Animal Hospital - Odenville, Alabama
At Branchville Animal Hospital, no patient is too unique, or too adorable! Here is a throwback to earlier this year when the team welcomed Laney Loo, a baby kangaroo, for a follow-up visit to have a fresh bandage applied to a healing wound on her rear foot. With her oversized ears and gentle demeanor, she quickly stole the hearts of everyone in the clinic. Known for their compassionate care and expertise with both common and exotic animals, Branchville Animal Hospital continues to be a trusted haven for all creatures, big, small, and wonderfully unusual.

Amici Pet Hospital of Little ItalyAmici Pet Hospital of Little Italy - San Diego, California
Even the tiniest patients get top-tier care and plenty of love at Amici Pet Hospital of Little Italy. Snowy, a fluffy little bundle of joy, stopped by for a routine tooth trim and ended up stealing every heart in the clinic. With her bright eyes and charming personality, she was the perfect mini-model to remind everyone just how important dental care is for exotic pets. The team gave Snowy a little tagline, “Chew on this: exotic pets need dental love too!”
