Vetcor Awards Scholarships to Aspiring Veterinary Professionals
Scholarship Award Winner, Emma White, with Vetcor Recruiter, Amy Anthony, and South Bay Hospital Manager, Julia DeCoteau

July 25, 2025

Caring for animals begins with caring for the people who will treat them tomorrow. That’s why we’re deeply committed to nurturing the next generation of veterinary professionals, not just as an obligation, but because we genuinely believe in the power of education to transform lives, both human and animal. Each year we proudly award scholarships to outstanding students in the Veterinary Assistant program at New Market Skills Center in Tumwater, WA, helping them take their first steps toward meaningful careers in animal care. Congratulations to the 2025 scholarship recipients:

  • Emma White, Timberline High School

  • Laura Mock, Black Hills High School

We’re excited to support their journeys and can’t wait to see how they shape the future of animal care through their passion and commitment.

A Foundation for Success

The Veterinary Assistant program at New Market Skills Center is meticulously designed to prepare high school juniors and seniors with a comprehensive, hands-on education and the skills needed for immediate employment in veterinary clinics. Students engage in theoretical learning and practical application, covering essential topics such as:

  • Animal restraint techniques

  • Medical terminology

  • Anatomy and physiology

  • Surgical and medical nursing procedures

  • Disease processes and safety practices

  • Animal husbandry

Hands-on experience is a cornerstone of the program. For example, students participate in weekly dog washes, which serve as a fundraising activity and a practical training opportunity in grooming, behavior assessment, and restraint techniques. Additionally, students gain invaluable real-world experience through internships at local veterinary clinics and working in the on-campus grooming facility.

Pathways to Higher Education and Careers

The program offers students the unique opportunity to earn college credit hours at esteemed institutions like Pierce College in Renton, WA. Upon successfully completing the program, students are prepared to enter any college Veterinary Technician Program or begin working in a veterinary clinic as an Assistant or an Animal Care Provider. In fact, multiple Vetcor clinics, including South Bay Veterinary Hospital, have hired graduates from the New Market Skills Center!
