Summary of Responsibilities for an Experienced Veterinary Assistant

The Veterinary Assistant supports veterinarians and technicians in delivering exceptional patient care and ensuring efficient hospital operations. This full-time role, with weekends off, requires a blend of technical skills, compassionate patient care, and strong client interactions.

 

Key Responsibilities:

  • Patient Care: Provide compassionate care to all patients, including handling and restraint, calming anxious animals, feeding, exercising, and grooming.
  • Clinical Assistance: Assist in surgical procedures, anesthetic monitoring, and the administration of medications. Perform blood draws, vaccinations, injections, and laboratory tests.
  • Technical Duties: Operate and maintain hospital equipment such as EKGs, fluid pumps, anesthetic monitors, and more. Fill prescriptions, calculate dosages, and ensure the security of controlled substances.
  • Client Interaction: Greet patients and owners, perform initial assessments (taking weight and vital signs), and educate clients on wellness plans and insurance. Maintain a positive and professional demeanor with clients at all times.
  • Facility Maintenance: Ensure the cleanliness of the hospital, including cleaning equipment, kennels, and facilities. Follow safety and wellness regulations and complete laundry duties.
  • Administrative Support: Maintain accurate medical records, assist with clerical tasks, and support hospital product and service promotion.

Essential Skills and Qualifications:

  • Experience: Preferably one or more years in a veterinary environment performing all relevant duties.
  • Physical Requirements: Ability to stand for extended periods and lift at least 40 lbs.
  • Soft Skills: Excellent communication, team orientation, time management, and customer service skills. Must be personable, professional, and able to quickly transition between tasks.
  • Technical Proficiency: Familiarity with hospital procedures, policies, and equipment, including computers and standard veterinary terminology.
