About the Role

Norwich Regional Animal Hospital is looking for a compassionate and engaged Veterinary Assistant to join our small but mighty team part-time.

We are a one-vet small animal general practice with a diverse clientele. We balance our schedule so not only are we never double booked but we have room to see urgent cases (both our clients and others). We have two exam rooms, a treatment room, lab, surgery suite and Xray. We are open Monday-Friday 8am-5pm

You are an experienced assistant who is looking for a better relationship with vet med. You want to be part of a medical team where your skills and experience is not only appreciated but is a vital part of our collaborative process. You enjoy both the wild hectic days and the quiet times monitoring a patient in recovery. You want to work at a practice where you can use the depth of your education and experience every day to provide excellent care. 

 

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provides compassionate care to patients and clients
  • Keeps accurate medical records in accordance with hospital policy, including in-depth knowledge of medical terminology and record keeping.
  • Prepares and maintains the exam rooms and treatment areas
  • Performs physical assessments and records observations, including triaging and problem-solving to achieve the best possible outcomes.
  • Safe, low-stress, and compassionate handling and restraint.
  • Prepares estimates for procedures and discusses financial commitments with clients
  • Venipuncture and IV catheter placement
  • Pharmacy skills, including protocols for filling in-house
  • Radiography and digital imaging
  • Monitors vitals by hand and with equipment
  • Sample collection and processing for in-house and reference labs
  • Builds initial rapport and long-term relationships with both pets and clients, successfully communicates plans and estimates to owners.
  • Maintains an appropriate inventory of all medical supplies as determined by the inventory control system
  • Assists the Veterinarian in medical, surgical, and dental procedures; prepares patients for surgery; administers anesthesia; monitors patients during surgery and recovery; administers fluids
  • Communicates within the team, proactively advocating for their patient’s needs
  • Operates practice management software (AVImark) and related software packages

 

Requirements:

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Genuinely enjoys working with animals and can deal with them even when they are stressed, ill, or in pain. Dedication to safety for all parties involved.
  • Must have a positive attitude and be a team player.
  • Well skilled in balancing multiple priorities and tasks with attention to detail.
  • Experience recognizing your limits and asking for help as needed.
  • Strong work ethic and track record of being reliable.
  • Willingness to learn new skills and techniques.
